So what even is “Flatlay Photography”?
Flatlay photography is simply arranging objects on a flat surface and photographing them from above. It is a relatively new form of still life photography, appearing more frequently as social media has risen in popularity.
I first started using flatlay photography to document my artwork for my website, portfolio, and for submissions to contests, shows, fairs, and publications. The more I used flatlays for documentation, the more I realized the potential this form of photography had for fine art, and then for branding purposes as well.
Flatlay photographs are all about using objects, lighting, texture, and color to tell a story- which is how Branding works too! Using a flat surface as a starting point, you can create so many unique emotions, moods, and tell so many different stories depending on what you use! This is the magic of the process, and my favorite part. To give you an idea of what I mean, here is a series of flatlay photos I’ve taken of my favorite item: my grandpa’s vintage type writer.
Take a look at each image, and notice how each one makes you feel. Depending on the background, the other objects in the photos, and the lighting, different emotions and moods are evoked! How cool is that?! I think it is amazing!
Using this same principle, we can do the same thing for your business. By identifying key elements of your brand, we can create images that evoke specific feelings in customers and clients that see your Branded Flatlays!
